Developments at the European x-ray free electron laser in Hamburg
Decking, Winfried
Germany

The European X-Ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) will be the first user facility for hard X-ray research based on the SASE FEL concept, combining extreme peak with very high average brilliance. Using super-conducting accelerator technology and long permanent-magnet undulators, five photon beam lines will deliver ultra short, coherent radiation pulses to initially ten scientific instruments. Free-electron laser radiation in the photon energy range from 250 eV to 12.4 keV and spontaneous radiation in the range from 20 keV up to a few 100 keV will be provided. The status of the design and construction of the accelerator and undulator sections, the overall layout of the 3.5km facility, and the selection process for the initial set of scientific instruments will be presented.
