Progress towards spin-Polarised measurements using a UHV variable temperature STM

We report on the development of SP-STM capability and present our initial results of measurements of Fe islands on W(110) using a variable temperature scanning probe microscope. Results are compared between using a W tip and a bulk Fe tip. Scanning tunnelling spectroscopy results are discussed showing difference between the curves when the Fe tip is placed on bare W or on over an Fe island. Modifications to the system are described which allow us to prepare thin films deposited on to e-beam cleaned tips.
