ISIS second target station vacuum systems
Hughes, Shaun
United Kingdom

The ISIS neutron source is at present the world’s most successful pulsed neutron facility used for the study of condensed matter using slow neutron scattering techniques. The source consists of an ion source, Linac accelerator, Synchrotron accelerator, Target station and currently 26 Beamlines, with design and construction underway for a second Target station with an additional 18 beamlines.
A brief description is given of the second target station project, giving an overview of the vacuum system design for the 143m long extraction proton line and two of the large neutron beamline pumping systems with volumes exceeding 125m3.
The proton line is currently being built to ultra high vacuum standards with reliability and minimum maintenance being key factors to reduce exposure of operating staff to radiation. These systems are scheduled for completion by September 2008.
