The production of carbon nanotubes(CNT’s) is accompanied almost with amorphous carbon and fullerenes impurities. Electronic and device applications of carbon nanotubes needs high quality and high purity CNT’s. The purification processes of CNT’s could change sample quality and introduce disordering on the walls of nanotubes. So the methods that generate less impurities have special importance.
In this study, carbon nanotubes were produced by arc discharge method using a 10000 watt home made reactor. In order to controll arc discharging, a magnetic field was applied around the arc plasma. The magnetic field was produced using four permenant magnets positioned symmetrically around the plasma. The samples were characterized and identified by scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction(XRD) measurements. The SEM pictures showed, the carbon nanotubes produced in the presence of magnetic field have much more purity, regularity and more parallel than those produced in the absence of magnetic field.
